How Battery-Electric Trucking Could Transform Regional Freight Operations

Sustainability on the Move in the Okanagan

As the push for greener logistics gains momentum, Nortrans Freight Management in Kelowna is closely watching new innovations in zero-emission trucking. A recent electric truck trial by FPInnovations in B.C.’s Interior is showing just how transformative this technology can be—especially for the forestry sector.

Electric Truck Trials Deliver Impressive Results

FPInnovations recently tested a Peterbilt 579 EV truck over two months, hauling Super B loads of veneer between Vernon and Armstrong. This trial proved that electric freight trucks can work efficiently in real-world conditions. The electric truck slashed energy costs by an estimated 80% compared to diesel, and it’s projected to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 323 tonnes over five years.

Thanks to regenerative braking, the truck also recaptured 286 kWh of energy, boosting overall performance. Drivers noticed a big difference too—they reported quieter rides, smoother acceleration, and less fatigue during long hauls.

Right now, the truck’s limited range allows only two trips per day. However, installing 30-minute opportunity chargers at both mill sites could double that to four daily trips. This small infrastructure investment could significantly increase efficiency.

Nortrans Eyes a Cleaner Future

Carriers like Nortrans Freight Management are paying close attention. With strong federal and provincial EV incentives—plus the chance to earn up to $23,500 per year in carbon credits per truck—the cost of owning an electric truck could soon match or even beat diesel.

“We’re committed to offering sustainable, high-efficiency freight solutions,” said the Nortrans team. “With promising results like these, we’re seriously evaluating how electric trucks could play a role in our future fleet.”

What’s Next for Regional Electric Freight?

Zero-emission trucking technology is moving fast. Battery capabilities are improving, and charging infrastructure is becoming more accessible and affordable. As a result, regional carriers in Western Canada have a real opportunity to lead the charge.

At Nortrans, the goal is clear: to deliver freight solutions that are not only reliable—but also responsible. As electric transport becomes more viable, Nortrans is prepared to be part of the shift toward a greener, cleaner Okanagan.
