Nortrans Takes the Wheel on BC’s First Hydrogen Truck
At Nortrans, we believe progress comes from action. That’s why we’re proud to be among the first companies in British Columbia preparing to operate a hydrogen-powered truck. This opportunity comes through our collaboration with HTEC and its innovative H2 Gateway Program. Together, we’re helping bring clean, cutting-edge technology to the road. Our goal is to make zero-emission freight a practical, near-future solution.
How the H2 Gateway Program Works
HTEC launched the H2 Gateway Program to build a complete hydrogen transportation ecosystem. Instead of waiting for demand to rise, HTEC is moving every part forward at once: fuel production, fueling stations, and vehicle availability.
Here’s how the system fits together:
-
Fuel-cell electric trucks (FCETs) like the H200 are available for lease through HTEC’s Vehicle Leasing Corporation (VLC). These trucks offer long range, strong performance, and zero tailpipe emissions.
-
Hydrogen fueling stations are under construction along major freight corridors in BC. These stations will provide fast, reliable fueling for both heavy- and light-duty hydrogen vehicles.
-
Hydrogen production facilities are also being developed. A Burnaby site is nearly complete. New facilities in Nanaimo and Prince George, along with a liquefaction plant in North Vancouver, are on the way. Together, they will supply clean, sustainable, locally sourced hydrogen.
By building supply, infrastructure, and vehicles at the same time, the H2 Gateway Program clears common roadblocks. It speeds up the transition to zero-emission transportation.
Why Nortrans Joined the Mission
We chose to step up and lead. When HTEC invited us to take part in the H200 pilot program, we saw a clear match with our values. This initiative aligns with our commitment to sustainable freight.
The truck is not yet running daily routes. However, we plan to begin operations later this year. The vehicle will be based in the Lower Mainland. It will run scheduled deliveries fueled entirely by hydrogen from HTEC’s new station, opening in November 2025.
Partnership Makes Progress Possible
HTEC is a vital partner for BC fleets exploring hydrogen-powered trucking. Its VLC program removes friction from the transition. The bundled offering includes leasing, maintenance support, and driver onboarding, all managed through one contact.
In addition, HTEC provides access to clean, locally produced hydrogen and growing fueling infrastructure. As a result, fleets like ours avoid the complexity of managing multiple vendors. This lets us stay focused on what we do best.
What’s Next for Nortrans
Once operations with the H200 begin, we’ll closely monitor performance. We’ll track what works, learn as we go, and share insights with others in the industry.
Meanwhile, we’re staying in sync with HTEC as they grow the fueling network and deploy more trucks. Every new development brings us closer to a cleaner freight future.
A Step Forward, One Truck at a Time
At Nortrans, we aren’t just watching change happen, we’re preparing to drive it. Our participation in the H2 Gateway Program reflects our commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable freight system in British Columbia. The H200 is more than just a truck, it’s a preview of what’s possible when innovation meets intention.
Stay tuned as we roll forward, one hydrogen-powered delivery at a time.
